Overview

Hammers are used to pick up structures you have placed down, as well as demolish structures you have no need for. It can also be used to claim abandoned structures and retrieve them, which is helpful in cases of griefing or to avoid having to build things that are already available for picking up for free.

Strategy

There is no direct strategy for using a hammer, only situations in which the use of a hammer would shorten the time you need to achieve a bigger goal. There are also a few quirks about the structures a hammer is used on which may be helpful in niche situations:

  • Claiming abandoned structures from players who have already left the server is a good way of saving up on resources you'd otherwise have to gather to build the same things.
  • Experienced players carry sets of these to avoid having their things stolen or destroyed, such as boats, forges and anvils, etc. Doing this is also convenient, as it prevents you from having to come back to your base every time you want to craft something that requires these structures.
  • Hammers work from any range as long as you are within its allowed range whenever you start to deconstruct. This means that if you're quick on the draw, you can deconstruct your ship while it's being stolen and it will still go back to your inventory, leaving the thief to drown in the sea.
  • Demolishing structures does not consume the hammer. You can demolish a whole, still active base if the original person who made the structures is gone from the server.
  • Structures cannot be interacted with a hammer if any of its parts are on fire.
  • If your ship has been destroyed, as long as the seat is still intact you will be still able to deconstruct and respawn the vessel as if nothing had happened. Losing the seat is what disables the deconstruct option, so if a player burns or explodes your boat, try your best to keep the seat intact so you can place it back.
  • The above does not work with structures without a controlling seat. If even one part is destroyed or otherwise detached from the original placed structure, you will be forced to demolish it.
  • If used with any structure for deconstructing, hammers do not keep any fireproofed or painted parts saved. Keep that in mind if you decide to customize your creations as you will not be able to deconstruct them without having to re-do all your work.
